More Word today — today being the chapter where we got to play around with graphics and clip art inside the document.
Homework:
Today in class we covered chapter 6, the second chapter of Word. We explored some slightly more advanced ways of formatting our documents and maybe, hopefully, picked up a tip or two to make our document creation a little faster.
Homework:
Welcome to first day of Microsoft Word. We dug in with Chapter 5, hopefully learned a lot, and were on our way.
Homework:
All we did today was take the midterm exam. Hopefully everyone got big, fat A’s on them!
Homework:
Today we finished up the “computer literacy” portion of class by talking about how to evaluate computers and decide what would work best for you. Chances are most, if not all, of you will be purchasing computers sometime in the next decade and figuring out which system will best suit your needs.
Next week, you will be having the midterm exam, covering the first four chapters of the book. In all likelihood, I will not be here, but don’t sweat it — I’ll have someone here to administer the test. After the test is finished, you’ll be free to go. Make sure you study chapters 1-4!!
Homework:
Today in Info Processing we talked about Operating Systems. Different examples of, and some pros and cons of using them. Since we’re a Windows school, we talked mainly about Microsoft Windows.
We then discussed and practiced making folders and moving files and folders around and within them. This was especially important since this WILL BE ON THE TEST IN TWO WEEKS! (I’ve already made the test so, trust me, it will be there.)
Next we talked about some of my favorite keyboard shutcuts that should save you some time. Some of these we talked about before, but still, it’s a good thing to do to keep your productivity level high. Here are my personal favorites:
Also, using the Alt key will help you navigate menus on your Windows so that you should have to pick up your mouse a minimal amount of time.
Homework:
Today we covered Chapter 2, the good ol’ Internet. We covered a wide gamut of information, including different types of social media web sites, and discussed some of the dangers involved with being on the Internet. To close the class, we discussed various spyware removal tools (the sheet I passed out is available here).
Homework:
Today we celebrated our first day of class by covering Chapter 1, which took a cursory view of computers in general.
We talked about how computers only understand two things: 1s and 0s, generically called bits. Groups of eight bits are bytes. ~1000 bytes is a kilobyte. About 1000 kilobytes is a megabyte. And 1000 megabytes is a gigabyte. After gigabytes, we have terabytes, petabytes and exobytes, if you’re curious.
We also talked about the differences between input and output devices. Input devices are what helps us put what is in our head into the computer. So, a keyboard would be considered an input device, and the monitor would be considered an output device. We also talked about how some devices can be both an input and an output device. Sue told us about the printer that she has which operates as a scanner (input), a fax machine (input and output) and a printer (output).
At the close of class, we opened up a computer and looked at the various parts inside as well as the various parts on the outside of the case.
